Two girls, about 7 years old, in matching sundresses and holding gerbera flowers are on a sunny deck with their grandparents. One kisses her grandmothers cheek, the other is laughing with her grandfather.

If you’re planning to welcome family or friends to Canada, you’ve probably come across two similar—but very different—types of medical coverage: visitors to Canada insurance and super visa insurance.

Both protect against the high cost of emergency medical care while in Canada. But the type of coverage you choose depends many factors. These are things like who’s coming, how long they’re staying, and what the purpose of their visit is. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide what’s right for your loved ones.

Who Is Super Visa and Visitors to Canada Insurance For

Visitors to Canada insurance is for short-term travelers—tourists, extended family, or friends. It’s flexible and ideal for people who plan to stay for a few weeks or months at most. This insurance is also a good option for Canadians returning home after living abroad, or new immigrants waiting for provincial health coverage to begin.

Super visa insurance, is specifically designed for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are applying for a super visa. The super visa allows them to visit family in Canada for up to 5 years at a time. And they don't need to renew their visitor status every 6 months.

Both provide medical protection for visitors. But, super visa insurance is required by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) as part of the visa application process.

How Much Coverage Do You Need

Financial coverage is where the two really start to differ.

Visitors to Canada insurance typically offers a range of coverage, often from $10,000 to $300,000. The level of protection depends on how long the person is visiting and how much they want to spend.

Super visa insurance must, by law, provide at least $100,000 in coverage for health care, hospitalization, and the cost of returning home in a medical emergency. This is the minimum required for the visa to be approved. Many families choose to purchase even higher coverage limits. Since older travelers may be more vulnerable to unexpected health issues, this gives peace of mind.

What Do Super Visa and Visitors to Canada Insurance Cover?

Both visitors to Canada insurance and super visa insurance cover emergency medical expenses. This means sudden, unexpected illnesses or injuries that need immediate attention.

This usually includes:

  • Hospital stays and medical services
  • Doctor visits and diagnostic tests
  • Ambulance transportation
  • Prescription drugs needed for emergencies
  • Emergency dental care (in limited situations)

However, super visa insurance tends to offer more comprehensive benefits and higher limits. This is because it’s meant for long-term stays and older adults. Some policies include more perks such as coverage for side trips outside Canada, or a deductible option to help lower the premium.

Neither plan is intended to cover routine or non-urgent medical care—like regular check-ups, ongoing prescriptions, or elective procedures.

How Long is Each Type of Insurance Good For

Visitors to Canada insurance is flexible. You can buy it for as little as a few days or as long as a year. You can usually extend it if your visitor decides to stay longer.

In contrast, Super visa insurance must provide at least 1 year of continuous coverage to meet government requirements. Even though the super visa itself allows up to 5years of stay, families can renew the insurance policy each year to keep the coverage active.

Think of it this way. Visitors to Canada insurance is like a short vacation plan, while super visa insurance is a long-stay, family-reunion plan.

Choosing What’s Right for You

If your friend or relative is visiting for a short time—maybe to attend a wedding, explore the Rockies, or meet a new grandchild—visitors to Canada insurance is likely enough.

If your parent or grandparent wants to spend years in Canada—watching the kids grow up, celebrating milestones, super visa insurance is the way to go.

Both options exist for one purpose: to ensure that loved ones can enjoy their time in Canada safely and without the worry of unexpected medical bills. A bit of planning ahead can make every visit—whether it’s for a few weeks or a few wonderful years—feel that much more secure.
