Student Travel Insurance
Is your child travelling to the US or abroad for school? Make sure they are protected with Student Emergency Hospital and Medical Insurance.
For a Canadian student traveling out of the country for their education
Student travel medical insurance is critical because health care costs in other countries can be very high. Travel insurance for students provides coverage for both emergencies and non-emergencies. And it’s more comprehensive than regular travel insurance.
What does student travel insurance typically cover?
- Hospitalization fees for a semi-private room
- Ambulance (Ground or Air Transportation)
- Prescription drugs required to treat emergency situations
- Professional fees for nurses, physicians and other health care professionals for emergency medical treatment
- Services from licensed practitioners such as physiotherapist, chiropractor, chiropodist, acupuncturist, speech therapist and others
- Eye exam
- Emergency dental treatment
- Wisdom tooth extraction
- Psychiatric and psychological care
- Prescription glasses, contact lenses and hearing aids
- Tutorial services
- Trauma counselling
- Coverage for COVID
- Pre-existing conditions covered if stable in the 90 days prior to the start of coverage
And many more.
And if your child decides to travel while studying, they will continue to be insured (so long as they spend 51% of the time in the country of study).
What isn’t typically covered by student health insurance?
There are a few common things that aren’t covered by your student health insurance:
- Pre-existing medical conditions that aren’t stable
- Extreme or adventure sports, although you can purchase additional coverage for these
- Injury or illness that happens as a result of alcohol or drugs
- Routine health care like dentist visits for non-emergencies
For a Canadian student going to school in a different province
Canadian students who travel to another province to study still have health coverage, but only at the rates paid by their home provinces government health insurance program (GHIP). If there’s a difference, it’s up to you to pay for it.

Student Travel Insurance FAQ
Is student travel insurance mandatory for studying abroad?
Student travel insurance is sometimes mandatory. It’s based on where you’re traveling to and the education institution. Many want to see proof of health insurance before you arrive. Be sure to check when you’re planning your trip.
What coverage limit should I choose?
The amount of student insurance coverage you should get also varies based on where you’re traveling. If you’re studying in the United States, a higher coverage limit of $1-2 million is recommended, since healthcare is expensive. For other countries, $500,000–$1 million is suggested.
What should I look for in a student travel insurance plan?
When shopping for a student travel insurance plan, be sure to get answers to these questions so you compare and make the right decision:
- What are the medical coverage limits?
- What are the rules around pre-existing conditions and what qualifies as “stable”?
- Is mental health care covered?
- Are prescriptions covered?
- If you play sports, particularly extreme or winter sports, are injuries covered?
- If you have to make a claim, is there a deductible?
- What is the claim process?
- What support is available and when?
What do I need to make an insurance claim?
It’s good to know what you need to make a claim against your student insurance, so you don’t run into any issues.
- Keep all medical receipts and reports
- Proof of your travel: things like boarding passes, accommodation confirmations, and itineraries
- If theft or assault was involved, you’ll need police reports
- You many need proof of enrollment in the education program
With most insurance companies, you can file claims online and support is available.
Can I get travel insurance coverage for the full length of my studies?
Yes, you can get insurance coverage for the whole time you’re away, even for long trips. Many insurance plans can provide:
- Full year or multi-year coverage
- Extensions if your program changes
- Short-term trips home in the middle of your studies without interrupting or cancelling your policy
Can I buy or extend student insurance coverage after I’ve already left Canada?
It’s best to have your insurance already in place before you travel. And depending on where you’re studying you may have to show proof. Sometimes travel plans change after you’ve left Canada. If you’re extending your trip or adding more destinations, check with your insurance provider.
